The University of Mons was formed in 2009 through the merger of two local universities in Mons: the Polytechnic Institute of Mons and the University of Hainaut-Mons. It is a renowned comprehensive research university in the French-speaking Wallonia region of Belgium. The predecessor of the university, the Polytechnic Institute of Mons, was established in 1837 under the authority of King Leopold I of Belgium. With a history spanning over 170 years, it was the first engineering school in Belgium and one of the oldest universities in the country.
