The full name of the Spanish DELE exam is Diplomas de Español Como Lengua Extranjera, which stands for Diplomas of Spanish as a Foreign Language examination. It’s a Spanish language proficiency test, equivalent to the TOEFL or IELTS exams in China. This diploma certifies the holder’s Spanish language proficiency and is officially recognized by the Spanish Ministry of Education, Ministry of Culture, and Ministry of Sports, and enjoys international recognition.

Spanish language proficiency tests developed relatively late in my country, only starting to be organized by the Ministry of Education in 2004. Furthermore, the Spanish language proficiency tests in my country are only for undergraduate students majoring in Spanish, and the exams are held around May each year. The DELE exam has three different levels:

Nivel Superior: Advanced scenarios requiring advanced Spanish language and cultural knowledge

Since 2011, the DELE exam has been set according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages ​​(CEFR), comprehensively describing the following: the necessary abilities for communication, related knowledge and skills, and the situations and areas of communication. It provides a detailed description of students’ language proficiency and practical communication skills from low to high. It describes typical abilities in the four skills of listening, speaking, reading, and writing, such as “being able to introduce oneself” and “being able to use language flexibly and effectively in social, academic, and work environments.” It divides language proficiency into three levels: A—Basic, B—Independent Use, and C—Proficient Use. Each level is further divided into two sub-levels: A1, A2, B1, B2, C1, and C2.
