This young institution evolved from a medical school founded in 1907. In 1965, the North Rhine-Westphalia government established the University of Düsseldorf on this basis. Initially, it offered three faculties: the Faculty of Medicine, the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, and the Faculty of Philosophy. Over the years, the university has flourished, evolving into a comprehensive university encompassing a Faculty of Law, a Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, a Faculty of Medicine, a Faculty of Philosophy, and a Faculty of Economics. Today, approximately 35,000 students (10% of whom are international students), over 2,000 faculty members, and 900 other staff conduct research, teaching, and work on campus. The university welcomed approximately 4,000 new students in the 2018/2019 winter semester.

The University of Düsseldorf, with its exceptional faculty, has cultivated a large number of outstanding talents. Numerous scholars and professors have received prestigious research awards both domestically and internationally. For example, a professor of molecular physics received the Alexander von Humboldt Chair for International Research Award (the Humboldt Chair Award, known as the “German Nobel Prize”). Four scientists have received the European Research Council’s Distinguished Service Award (Europe’s highest research award). Five scientists have received the Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz Prize (one of Germany’s most important research awards, recognizing leading young researchers in various disciplines). Eight scientists have received the Humboldt Research Award (awarded to outstanding scientists outside of Germany). The list goes on.
